...the wife of your youth, whom you betrayed, and she is your friend...*
My goal for these pieces was to humanize the wives, as they are qualified in these
writings by their ages - 9 years in the case of the Rambam; 16 in the case of R'
Hanannya Gavriel; or almost not at all in the case of R' Prado on the Greek Island;
or their actions - in the Rambam responsa, she became a teacher; in R' Gavriel's - I
depicted her simply joyful at the idea of this beautiful, wealthy suitor, deeply
devastated and trapped at the realization of his true age and likeness; or in the case
of R' Prado, in which she is hardly mentioned, simply accepting, waving her
husband off as he leaves on the ship, welcoming him back when he finally returns
several years later, only to find him accompanied by another woman, their two
children along with the fortune he inherited from the father of his new bride.
These stories themselves are emotionally taxing, from both a global human
perspective and my own personal one, and even more challenging to depict
visually. Nevertheless, I very much enjoyed applying this visual story-telling
technique that I developed from studying works by David Moss and adapting it to
the needs and requirements I found necessary here. I cut the figures from rice and
tracing papers which I first painted with ink, acrylic and water colors so that they
could represent the different characters.

tractate Gitin 90: "Rabbi Eleazar said: "Any [man] who casts out his first wife, even
the altar sheds tears about this, as it is said... "because Gd testified between you
and the wife of your youth, whom you betrayed and she is your friend and the wife
of your covenant."

מטרתי היתה האנשת הנשים המקודשות, שאם הוזכרו בכלל בשו"תים האלה, הוזכרו בגילן - 9 שנים
בפרשת הרמב"ם, 16 בפרשת ר' חנניה גבריאל, או כמעט בכלל לא בפרשה של ר' פראדו באי היווני, או
מעשיהן - בשו"ת הרמב"ם, היא הפכה למורה, אצל ר' גבריאל - פשוט כצעירה ששמחה על עצם הרעיון
של מחזר יפה ועשיר במומבאי, הופכת להרוסה עמוקות, ולכודה בהכירה בגילו ודמותו האמיתיים, או
במקרה של ר' פראדו, בקושי מוזכרת, ולכן הצגתי אותה כמקבלת את גורלה, מניפה שלום לבעלה
כשהוא עוזב אותה בספינה, ועומדת לקבל ולברך אותו כשהוא סוף סוף חוזר לאחר מספר שנים, רק
למצוא שהוא מלווה באישה חדשה, שני ילדים וההון שירשו מאבי אשתו החדשה.
הסיפורים הללו מכבידים רגשית, הן מנקודת המבט האנושית העולמית, והן מנקודת המבט האישית שלי,
ומאתגרים עוד יותר לתיאור חזותי. עם זאת, נהניתי מאוד לפתח וליישם טכניקת סיפור המבוסס על מה
שלמדתי מעבודות של דוד מוס, והתאמתי אותם לצרכים ולדרישות כפי שראיתי אותם כאן. הדמויות
נחתכו מנייר אורז ונייר שקוף שצבעתי בצבעי דיו, אקריליק ומים כדי לאפשר ייצוג של הדמויות השונות.
